Shining Light Kids is an outreach programme of Shining Light Kingdom Builders church, that seeks to provide holistic education support for children from low income families. The outreach is targeted at children who will not have had a chance at education because of financial constraints and limited exposure. The goal is to give children from low-income families a chance at reaching their utmost potential in life.
In 2010, the founders of Shining Light Kids (SLK) outreach discovered 40 underprivileged children who were out of school and living in a displaced community. These children were immediately registered in schools. Till date, 200 children have been admitted into the SLK scholarship programme, with some of the students currently registered in secondary schools. The goal is to support children in the SLK programme throughout their education life cycle (primary to university).
SLK outreach takes care of the children by purchasing their textbooks, lunch, school uniforms, shoes and school bags. This has positively affected the children’s academic performance. Over 1,000 children have been impacted from our feeding program and Saturday classes which is open to any child of any faith that shows up on any Saturday. We have volunteers that spend 2 hours with them every Saturday teaching them English, mathematics and bible study. Our volunteers from all walks of life and other churches, and all our programs are open to all people.
Over the long holiday, SLK organises an intervention programme for 100 kids from low-income families, with a focus on building patriotism, creativity, public speaking, numeracy and literacy skills. At the end of the programme, each child also received a back-to-school pack.
Current Needs
- Support for the current kids on the SLKO programme – costs N3.2 million annually
- Replication of the SLKO programme in other communities – costs N3.2 million annually
- Purchase of boarding facility for Shining Light orphaned and vulnerable kids – in Mararaba, Nasarawa State – cost of target location N18 million.
